In this day and age where multi-tasking is a essential to any job and lifestyle, people are looking to their mobile phones for more than just sending text messages or calling. Techies and non-techies have all been hooked to one of the most popular cool gadgets of this era, and have found several different ways to enjoy their hand-held buddies. Unlike in the recent past when the inclusion of games to a mobile phone was enough to create a huge shebang; people now look for, insist on, and ultimately find, the things they need from their phones.

And since mobile phone manufacturing companies are keen on giving what consumers want, even before they realize that they want it; new cell phone models with a myriad of functions have been popping up like mushrooms. It seems like everywhere you look another hot new model has been released by another new mobile phone company. So when you need a cellular upgrade, or just need to purchase a new hand-held phone, choosing the right device for you may get extremely confusing and frustrating.

To help you decide which phone is the right brace for you, you need to consider several different things. Be realistic about what features and functions you actually need; and decipher which functions are superfluous and non-practical (although they give you bragging rights sometimes).

Aesthetics and Ergonomics:

One of the primary concerns when you are buying a hand held phone is the aesthetics and the design of the unit. You wouldn’t want to purchase a phone that you do not exactly find attractive. More than that, one must consider the ergonomics of the phone. Is it light enough to carry around? Would you feel comfortable walking around with that phone in your bag, or is it too light for you to take notice of? Is the hand held unit too chunky for your liking; or maybe it is too small for your hand, thus making it a challenge to key in text messages?

Would you prefer your phone to have a flip-top, a rotating screen, or maybe a flip-out keyboard? These are just some of the things you have to consider and try out for yourself.

You may ask the mobile phone dealer to show you a working sample of the phone for you to have a feel of how the unit actually works, how it feels in your hands, and how comfortable you are with it. remember, what sounds good on paper, does not necessarily work for everybody. The best tip: try the unit out and discover if it is one you would want to keep around for a long time.

Battery Life and Talk Time:

If you plan on using your cellular phone to receive calls regularly, you must find a unit that has a long talk time. That is, it lasts for hours and hours even if you are continuously talking with somebody on the other end.

Aside from that, you must also check the cell phone battery life of your unit. Are you on your phone for most of the day, or is your phone reserved for really important calls or messages? Do you plan on using your phone for web-surfing, games, playing music and other functions that may drain the battery faster than when you use it solely for calls and sending text messages? If this is the case, a unit with a long-lasting battery is also recommended for you.

Although choosing a unit that has the longest battery life seems to be the wiser choice in any situation; sometimes, the huge price difference may sway your judgment. Ask yourself if you really need a unit that has a long battery life, and is it worth the extra dollars you may have to spend to purchase such a unit.

Camera:

A lot of phones today have a built-in camera. Camera phones are significantly pricier than units that do not have this feature. Decide whether you want to purchase a cell phone with a high Megapixel count. If you already own a digital camera with a high Megapixel count, you might want to rethink paying a higher price for a cell phone unit that boasts of a feature you do not necessarily need.

Display:

Cellular phone models today offer different kinds of displays; there are monochromatic displays, colored displays, and even touch screen displays.

If you intend on using your cellular phone to surf the Internet or play games, you must choose a unit with a high resolution display. Look for models that boast of TFT (Thin Film Transistor) displays which are better than the more common, LCD display. This type of display gives you a better image, and more vibrant colors.

If you truly want a different viewing experience, for when you watch videos or use 3G calling capabilities, look for cell phone units that offer an Active Matrix Screen which gives you a wider viewing angle. You would also want to check the size of the display, the number of colors and the resolution.

Keypad:

For people who often use their cell phone units to send text messages, the keypad is extremely important. Make sure that your fingers fit the keypads as some units have super small keys, which makes it hard for people with large fingers to key in their messages.

You must also check if you are comfortable with the layout of the keypad. Some cellular phone units have unique key arrangements, and this is something you have to really try out pre-purchase.  Although some keypad styles look chic, they may not be very practical for your own usage.

These are just some of the things to watch out for when choosing a cell phone model to purchase. In the end, the unit you pick will be with you for a long, long time; and it has to execute exactly what you need, at a price you are conformable to pay.
